World of Firnum
A SPATTERING OF LORE FOR THEE
As stated in the Core Barrows & Borderlands set, the setting in which I run B&B is a strange flat earth floating through an endless void. I also mentioned that it is valuable for Referee’s to change their setting to match what suits them best. However I find it worthwhile to include at least one spread here on the Cosmology I had planned for my setting, and perhaps you will understand the inspiration for some of the rules I present here in this supplement.
A fractured home. Firnum, the flat rock that houses all the great nations of Malores, Urden, Khalida, and Osmia. Between them all lies the Borderlands, region that sits in the intersection between fact and fiction. It is the epicenter of starfall impacts, the former home of Dynaco Industries, and the most resource rich region in the world. This is where 95% of my stories take place. Though the world did not always look like this.
Countless years ago, the first inhabitants, the Saurians ruled the planet known as Earth. These reptilian conquerors developed an technological society, and eventually reached for the stars. A sickness grew within them as they became too large and life too dull. Dark sorcerer’s rose amongst their ranks plotted to bring about a great change in the structure of magic. Arguments of the creation of new races born from dark experiments that refuse to submit to their creators. It was in this time that a grand device was constructed, one meant to free them, but eventually became their downfall.
They were losing their sentience slowly devolving and becoming barbaric. The power imbued within the device could create an entire universes, a place where they could set the laws of nature without check. Maybe in these new universes they could escape the madness infecting their minds. Unfortunately, they were too late. Their creations rebelled. In fear the Saurians sealed the device away. The elite created great Arks to into flee to the Black Gulf. Rumor has it they died in their giant derelict coffin Arks. Sepulchers to lost dreams and ambitions. The creations of the Saurians inherited the now abandoned world. The once powerful yet now forgotten Saurian masters were scattered to the sands of time.
Slumbering beneath the forlorn lands an uncaring intelligence festers within the veins of the Earth, plotting for its time to rise...
Mankind rose from those ashes to make something better than what could have been before. Conquering nature with metal towers reaching towards the sky. It was during this time that a company known as Dynaco came about in the city of New Babylon. Ran by the eccentric and rumored satanist Arthur William Black, nicknamed the Man Upstairs. Dynaco rediscovered the device left behind by the Saurians and claimed it as their own. Thinking the lost machine would unlock infinite power. They in their Hubris rebuilt it and named it the Starfall Device. However, this device would soon became their end. Upon activation, the Starfall device opened a rift, shattering Earth and sending the solar system spiraling into the Violet. (See Thundarr opening but like wayyy worse) Somehow remnants of mankind survived. Living now on one of the floating pieces of broken earth today called Firnum. The stars in the sky, no longer balls of gas, but now sentient beings who became attracted by the still active Starfall device.
The planets rearranged and our Sun now the lone true star. Mankind tried to thrive once again mutated by the radiation that now permeates the land. Magic and sorcery brought in full force, chaotic and untamable. The fey of old earth, slowly crawling from their holes to reclaim the world that is now foreign to them. This is now the age of Steel, Black-powder, Sorcery.
