A Dark Ages Old Style RPG of Warbands, Domains, and Dragons
Take a warband from 1st to 13th level across Middangeard - a warbound world of swords, domains, and dragons. From the shores of Hibernia come the tales of the Old Gods, known in the common tongue as Barrowmail.
Barrowmail is built on the oldest bones in the hobby, Chainmail, meets 0E, meets Tony Bath! where gamers can run entire nations with family trees and grand military campaigns.
100 pages. Runs on d6s.
What's Inside
- Classless Characters - Want to be a fighting-man? Wear armor and pick up a sword. Want to be a thief? Take the armor off.
- Component-Based Spellcraft - Build spells from Concentrates and Additives, then bind them to an Invocation. Mix Water and Air for ice; Man and Control for a charm. You don't memorize magic, you craft it - and it can fail badly. 30 worked spell recipes included.
- Prayer, Pleas & Black Marks - Petition your god for aid, or proclaim His wonders. Your Referee tracks your sins in secret, and an unhappy god stops answering.
- Three Combat Procedures - Abstract for armies, Detailed for duels, Fantastic for dragons and superheroes. Twenty men or two thousand, it resolves in about the same time.
- Naval & Siege Rules - Longships, ramming, boarding actions, sea weather, boiling oil, sappers, and counter-mines.
- Domain Level Play - Baronies, tithes, taxes, and investments. In The King and His Land, rulers age, marry, take ill and die, and the land sickens along with them.
- 60+ Monsters - Plus a Monster Creation Procedure that converts creatures from most classic-style games straight into Middangeard.
- A Full Referee Toolkit - Hex-map generation, wandering castles and cities, treasure and magic items, random heraldry, a jousting matrix, warband creation, and a solo Oracle for when you can't get a table together.
Standalone, and Compatible
Barrowmail is a complete game, you need nothing else to run it. It's designed to sit beside Barrows & Borderlands, and works with most classic-style and OSR systems. Referees can use it purely as a mass-combat layer for the game they already run: when the party drags twenty mercenaries into a dungeon, you resolve the fight quickly without dragging combat on for hours.

Absolutely love this book. All of the Barrows and Borderlands products are outstanding, but Barrowmail stands just a little bit taller in my assessment. I highly recommend this book as an addendum to another TTRPG system, or as a game all to itself. I have played it both with a group and solo and it has never disappointed. I really cannot recommend it highly enough.
Super fun to build and read through. He did a great job with this one. Looking forward to running it soon.
Writing a new review as Matt reached out to me and replaced the banged up copy I received. The fact that he reached out to me on his own accord is awesome and you don't see that kind of thing anymore.
The Book itself is awesome I could see myself running any kind of game with this seamlessly switching between wargame and more traditional zoomed in ttrpg play with no adjustments to rules or hacks.
It's really a remarkable book, something I never thought I'd see
Matt Tapp has done an excellent job with this. And the production and delivery and such is fantastic. Agile Monk
Barrowmail is a great d6 system. It can handle everything from dungeon crawling to mass combat.
